August 29, 2026 – Memorial of the Passion of Saint John the BaptistReadings: 1 Thessalonians 4:1–8; Mark 6:17–29
Some sins you can hide for a while. But the truth always calls them out and when truth is spoken, someone pays a price. John the Baptist looked Herod in the eye and spoke one clear word of truth. It cost him his life. Saint Paul reminds us: “This is the will of God: your holiness.” We are faced with the same decision: will we pay the cost of holiness, or the cost of sin?
Homily preached by Fr. Korey LaVergne at Saint Edward Catholic Church in Richard, LA.

Memorial of Saint Augustine – August 28, 2025Gospel: Matthew 24:42–51
We spend years planning for retirement, but how often do we prepare for eternal life? Jesus warns us: “Stay awake, for you do not know on which day your Lord will come.” Saint Augustine learned this lesson the hard way. Brilliant, but restless, he searched in false philosophies and worldly pleasures until the prayers of his mother, Monica, softened his heart. His restless years were not wasted: they became the soil of his holiness.
In this homily, preached at Saint Edward Catholic Church in Richard, Father Korey reminds us that readiness is not anxiety, but daily love and holiness. Restless hearts can be redeemed. Wasted years can be transformed. The question is: Will we remain awake when the Master comes?

August 27, 2025 | Memorial of Saint Monica
Today’s homily is especially for parents and grandparents whose children or grandchildren have walked away from the Catholic faith. Like Saint Monica weeping for Augustine, you know the ache of watching a loved one wander. Today’s readings remind us that no one can outrun God’s mercy: our prayers, our tears, and our witness matter.
Key line: “Parents: you are not their saviors. You are God's intercessors. Your job is not to fix your children, but to entrust them again and again into the hands of Jesus.”
Recorded by Rev. Korey LaVergne at Saint Edward Catholic Church, Richard, Louisiana.

Tuesday of the Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time (August 25, 2025).
The Gospel today (Matthew 23:23–26) has Jesus confronting the Pharisees with one of His sharpest images: “You strain out gnats, but swallow camels.” He warns against the comedy of hypocrisy—polishing the outside while the inside rots. Saint Paul offers the antidote in 1 Thessalonians 2:1–8: not showy religion, but a life poured out like a mother caring for her child.
“What camel are you trying to swallow while fussing over gnats?”
This homily was preached by Fr. Korey LaVergne at St. Edward Catholic Church in Richard, Louisiana.

August 25, 2025 | Memorial of Saint Louis, King of France
Today’s Gospel (Matthew 23:13–22) is not a gentle one: Jesus cries out “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees!” He warns us about turning religion into a show when appearances become more important than God Himself.
Saint Louis, a king who could have lived for appearances, instead chose humility and faith. In a letter to his son, he urged him: love God, go to confession, serve the poor, listen in church, and govern with justice. One striking line: “Choose confessors and friends who will dare to correct you.” That is the opposite of hypocrisy. That is humility.
Today’s homily is a call back to simplicity: to love God more than glitter, to seek reality over appearances, to live faith humbly and joyfully. That is more than enough.

21st Sunday in Ordinary Time – August 24, 2025Gospel: Luke 13:22–30
“Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” These words of Jesus are not meant to soothe us but to wake us up. In this homily, Fr. Korey warns against gossip, prejudice, and division that poison the Body of Christ. The Eucharist is not neutral: He will either save us or condemn us. God’s discipline is not rejection. It is the only love that sets us free.

August 23, 2025 – Saturday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary TimeReadings: Ruth 2:1–3, 8–11; 4:13–17 | Matthew 23:1–12
God often chooses the humble to carry forward His plan of salvation. Ruth, a foreign widow, finds her place in Israel’s story not through power but through faithfulness. From her line will come King David and ultimately Christ.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus warns against the scribes and Pharisees who love titles and recognition but fail to live what they teach. This becomes the perfect moment to address a common question: Why do Catholics call priests “Father”? In this reflection, we explore the meaning of spiritual fatherhood and how humility, not status, is the true measure of greatness in the Kingdom.

On August 22, the Church celebrates the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, just one week after the Solemnity of the Assumption. Today’s Gospel recalls the Annunciation, when Mary received Gabriel’s message and responded with her fiat: “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Her Queenship began not with power or pride, but with humility and surrender. As Fr. Korey reflects: “Mary reigns because she surrendered. She is Queen because she first was handmaid.”

Memorial of Saint Pius XJudges 11:29–39a | Psalm 40 | Matthew 22:1–14
Jephthah’s rash vow ended in tragedy. The man without the wedding garment was cast out of the feast. Both thought they could approach God on their own terms. Both were wrong.
Saint Pius X opened the Eucharistic banquet to children, lowering the age for First Communion so the little ones could taste Christ’s Body and Blood. But he also insisted that we come clothed in Christ—with obedience, holiness, and faith.
“Many are invited. Few are chosen.” The banquet is ready. The King is here. The only question is: will we clothe ourselves in Christ?

On the Memorial of Saint Bernard (August 20, 2025), the readings draw us into two striking images: the thorn bush that rules when fruitful trees refuse to lead (Judges 9:6–15), and the vineyard master who pays every worker the same wage (Matthew 20:1–16). Both expose the danger of envy and the futility of chasing advantage.
Fr. Korey LaVergne preaches that God’s mercy is not about hours logged or distinctions earned, but about the free and generous gift of salvation. “The denarius is eternal life, stamped with His image.”
